Bacterial Vaginosis May Be Result of Sexual Intercourse - Everyday Health

Image
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common infection caused by a change in the bacterial balance in the vagina — and a treatable problem many women suffer from frequently. Now, a new study published in August 2020 in  Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology suggests that her male partner may play a role in this. Related: Everything You Need to Know About Sex Toy Care and Cleanliness When the Penis Microbiome and the Vaginal Microbiome Meet Researchers followed 168 heterosexual couples in which the women did not have bacterial vaginosis at the start of the study and assessed the presence of BV after one month, six months, and a year, using vaginal swabs; also, at each visit, the men had swabs taken of the bacteria in and around their penises (what's called the "penile microbiome"). Over the course of the year, 31 percent of the women developed BV. The incidence was slightly higher among women whose partners hadn't been circumcised, perhaps because the...

Modification of the immune response by bacteriophages alters methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection | Scientific Reports - Nature.com

Image
Abstract There is an urgent need to develop phage therapies for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. However, although bacteria have been shown to be susceptible to phage therapy, phage therapy is not sufficient in some cases. PhiMR003 is a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus phage previously isolated from sewage influent, and it has demonstrated high lytic activity and a broad host range to MRSA clinical isolates in vitro. To investigate the potential of phiMR003 for the treatment of MRSA infection, the effects of phiMR003 on immune responses in vivo were analysed using phiMR003-susceptible MRSA strains in a mouse wound infection model. Additionally, we assessed whether phiMR003 could affect the immune response to infection with a nonsusceptible MRSA strain. Interestingly, wounds infected with both susceptible and nonsusceptible MRSA strains treated with phiMR003 demonstrated decreased bacterial load, reduced inflammation and accelerated wound closure. Moreover, the infi...

According to Emelis Santos '24, UConn Waterbury is the place to be. The allied health sciences major has nothing against the main campus in Storrs or any of UConn's other regional campuses. But the Waterbury native majoring in allied health sciences says the close-knit atmosphere and opportunity to stay close to her community gives Waterbury the edge. Santos isn't alone. She joins a growing number of students choosing to attend all four years at the Waterbury campus to pursue allied health sciences since the program's inception in the fall of 2020. Enrollment in the major has ballooned from 44 students in spring 2021 to 72 in spring 2022. There will be 37 incoming first-year students for the fall 2022 semester as well. The allied health major is definitely preparing me to be successful in the future. Image
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. Healthcare professionals diagnose an around 820,000 new cases of gonorrhea in the United States every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While the internet is full of potential home remedies for gonorrhea, these aren't reliable. Antibiotics are the only effective treatment for gonorrhea. Researchers have actually put a lot of popular gonorrhea home remedies to the test in various studies over the years. Let's examine why they don't hold up. Garlic Garlic is known for its antibacterial properties, making it a common home remedy for bacterial infections. An older 2005 study examined the effects of garlic products and extracts on gonorrhea-causing bacteria. The researchers found that 47 percent of the products studied showed antimicrobial activity against the bacteria. This is somewhat promising — but this study was done in a laboratory settin...

Rare Earth's Peter Rivera and company light up the Fox with a symphony of hits - The Spokesman Review

Image
Rare Earth rocker Peter Rivera brought an infectious enthusiasm and a unique twist to classic hits performed at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox Friday night. Local group Vika and the Velvets warmed up the crowd there to see Peter Rivera's R&B Celebrate Symphony, opening with Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" and Pickwick's "Hacienda Motel" before moving into a few originals, each somehow better than the last. The set culminated in a song I'll likely be listening to for the next week on repeat, "70s Haze." Peter Rivera and his R&B Celebrate Symphony perform the hits of Rare Earth, Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Fox Theater. All of the evening's performers were from the Spokane region, including students and alums from Whitworth and Gonzaga. The event benefited the music departments at Whitworth University and Gonzaga University, as well as Northwest Passage's Community Journalism Fund....
