A Timeline Of Will And Jada's 'Bad Marriage For Life'

How the hell did it come to … this? Let us explain. Photo: Scott Myers/Shutterstock

How's this for a slap in the face? Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband, Will Smith, have been secretly separated since 2016. The news of their now-seven-year-long separation comes as a shock to the public, which has witnessed the pair booed up on red carpets, oversharing intimate details about their relationship, and standing up for each other when a petty comedian made a stupid joke and got slapped for it. There were a few signs to marital discord that the power couple couldn't hide, though. In 2020, Jada Pinkett Smith brought herself to the Red Table and revealed that she'd had a relationship with R&B singer August Alsina while "temporarily" separated from her husband.

While Will and Jada promised to lay their cards on the table a few years back, hindsight proves that a lot was left unanswered. Why did the couple separate and keep it a secret? Why did she decide to share the news? Were she and Will in an open relationship before the separation? What exactly is an entanglement? As such, we took it upon ourselves to map out the complete timeline of Will and Jada's relationship, from meeting on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to sitting across from each other at the Red Table to Jada's latest act of oversharing.

1994: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett meet on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air when Jada auditions to play Smith's girlfriend. She ultimately loses the part to Nia Long because she's too short (heightism strikes again), but a connection is made. At the time, Smith is married to actress Sheree Zampino.

Sometime later in 1994: Will and Jada begin seeing each other romantically. Legend has it that Will called Jada and asked if she was seeing someone. She said no, and he said "Cool, you're seeing me now." Both Will and Jada maintain they began seeing each other after Will and Sheree separated.

December 10, 1995: Smith officially divorces his first wife, Sheree Zampino, mother to his oldest son, Trey. He calls the divorce "the worst thing in his adult life" on an episode of Red Table Talk.

December 31, 1997: Will and Jada get married in her hometown of Baltimore on New Year's Eve. In a 2019 People cover story, Jada recalls "infuriating pressure" to marry Will after getting pregnant with son Jaden. "I never wanted to get married. But my mother was like, 'You have to get married' — she's so old-school — and Will wanted a family. So I said, 'All right, maybe it's something I should do.'"

July 8, 1998: Will and Jada's first child together, Jaden Smith, is born. An unprecedented amount of vibes are unleashed into the world.

October 31, 2000: On All Hallow's Eve in the first year of the new millennium, Willow Smith is born. She'd one day teach us how to whip our hair to and fro.

August 23, 2011: A decade passes of relative marital bliss between Will and Jada. However, on this day in 2011 the couple releases a joint statement to combat rumors that Jada was dating her Hawthorne co-star, Latin music superstar and J.Lo's husband at the time, Marc Anthony. "Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false. We are still together, and our marriage is intact," the couple said in a statement to People.

While the couple's joint statement was strong, a rep for Jada was slightly vaguer, saying, "All the rumors regarding Marc Anthony and Jada are false. Completely untrue. As for [the reports of a split between] Will and Jada, I'm not commenting on their personal life." No word from Jenny From Da Block.

August 14, 2013: Jada takes to Facebook to address rumors that she and Will have an open marriage. The impassioned post ends with the following message: "Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship … this means we have a GROWN one."

Open marriage? Let me first say this, there are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening...

Sometime in 2013: Rumors surface that Will Smith had an affair with Margot Robbie while filming Focus in 2015. Neither Robbie nor Smith ever directly addressed the rumors, but the internet seems pretty convinced.

June 3, 2015: Jada goes on Howard Stern and discusses her relationship with Will. "I'm not the kind of woman that believes that a man's not gonna be attracted to other women," says Jada during the interview. "It's just not realistic. And just because your man is attracted to another woman doesn't mean he doesn't love you. And it doesn't mean he's gonna act on it." Got it.

June 28–July 5, 2015: Jada attends the Wireless Festival in London to support Jaden and Willow, who are both performing. There, the 43-year old actress meets a 22-year-old August Alsina for the first time. The entanglement ensues …

August 3, 2015: Will addresses rumors that he and Jada are headed toward divorce in a Facebook post where he refers to Jada as "his queen." Jada takes to Twitter and simply says "My king has spoken." The monarchy remains intact.

Under normal circumstances, I don't usually respond to foolishness. (Because it's contagious) But, so many people have...

Sometime in 2016: Unbeknownst to the tabloids, Will and Jada apparently separate. No one guesses they've broken up. "We decided that we were going to separate for a period of time, and you go figure out how to make yourself happy and I'll figure out how to make myself happy," Smith said in their eventual Red Table Talk.

June 25, 2017: Jada and August Alsina attend the BET Awards together. They seem … cozy! Queen Latifah clearly knows something.

July 21, 2017: While promoting her upcoming film Girls Trip, Jada goes on Watch What Happens Live! And says that the craziest rumor she's ever heard about her and Will is that they're swingers. "That's the craziest one," says Jada. "It's constant. And I'm like, 'Yo, I wish. I wish.'" Careful what you wish for …

December 21, 2017: Will posts a long, emotional Instagram for his 20th wedding anniversary with Jada. "Love is Like Gardening … I have learned to focus on HELPING you to BLOSSOM into what YOU want to be (into what you were born to be) … Rather than Demanding that you become what my Fragile Ego needs you to be."

July 11, 2018: August Alsina takes a seat at the Red Table next to Jada to discuss his issues with alcohol, sex, and drug addiction. Jada introduces him as "a dear family friend."

April 10, 2019: August Alsina drops a music video for his remix to Kehlani's "Nunya." In the video, his Animoji is texting someone named "Koren <3" which is Jada Koren Pinkett Smith's middle name. He also uses a GIF of Jada in the video right after singing the lyric "You got me feeling like it was an act, you're just an actress / Putting on a show 'cause you don't want the world to know / That you lost a man who loved you all along / Baby, couldn't we just let this go?" At the time, Alsina denied claims that the video was about Jada, but I mean … come on.

June 30, 2020: The entanglement begins to unravel. While promoting his upcoming album The Product III: stateofEMERGEency, August Alsina sits down with The Breakfast Club's Angela Yee and claims that he "gave years of his life" to Jada in a romantic relationship with Will Smith's blessing. Later that day, reps for Jada calls Alsina's claims "absolutely not true." Okay, Jada …

July 2, 2020: Jada takes to Twitter to announce the inevitable. "There's some healing that needs to happen … so I'm bringing myself to the Red Table." The internet goes wild.

July 10, 2020: The now infamous Red Table Talk occurs. Jada confirms that she had a relationship with August, but denies that Will ever gave his blessing, claiming the two were separated at the time. Will Smith glaring becomes a meme. The world Googles what the word entanglement means. "We ride together, we die together. Bad marriage for life!" they chanted in the style of Bad Boys.

Jada and Will address the recent headlines and share their journey of finding peace through pain.

7:16 p.M. On July 10, 2020: Somehow, Keke Palmer gets wrapped up in this mess. After tweeting about watching the Red Table Talk, a fan "this you'd" her and posted a photo of Palmer with August Alsina. "Yes girl," Palmer tweets in response. "August was never my man lol. That's why you're still reaching to this day to figure out nothing."

August, most likely in his feelings, took to Twitter to confirm that he was, in fact, never Keke's man. Things are getting messy.

7:48 p.M. On July 10, 2020: August Alsina, still in his feelings it seems, continues to post about the entanglement on Twitter. "If you have something to say, say it w/ ya CHEST kids. It's always very perplexing cause I real deal be showing people genuine love. Whole time that envy eating ya lil heart. Anyway, NEXT!!" Feelings seem to be hurt.

July 11, 2020: Famed troll 50 Cent posts a screenshot of a DM conversation he allegedly had with Will Smith about the talk around the Red Table. In the DMs, Will says "We broke up so she did her and I did me." 50 Cent follows what appears to be genuine concern for Will with a joke about August and Jada's entanglement. Will did not appreciate it.

July 13, 2020: Somehow, Keke Palmer gets the last laugh.

July 18, 2020: Alsina released "Entanglements," a song with Rick Ross that gets to the core of his heartbreak over Jada. Several lyrics seem to reference her, including, "That ain't my girl, but I got they key to the crib and to the car," as well as, "You left your man just to fuck with me and break his heart." His lyrics also defined "entanglement" in very clear terms: "The definition of entanglement / It's when you're tangled in the sheets." Very subtle.

March 29, 2022: Alsina shares an Instagram post following Will's Oscars slap. "Choose peace; trusting that life's intricate puzzle pieces 🧩 are all forming together for the greater good and mastering of the seasonally sometime chaotic nature of your life's art piece that's being formed and painted by birthing life to your internal masterpiece; grown through external chaos-metamorphosing alchemy, dark turned 2 light and beauty within," he writes. "Then turned Master P (i) E^CE shown without, from your life's own whimsical & colorful art-piece, being co created and displayed through living while/after being broken to peace's/pieces.🖼 🤞🏽💫 🕊."

"🗣 I'm A Walking Billboard & Network Simply Desiring To Televise & Broadcast Love, the love, grace and healing embrace of God, Good Music that's healing (w/ a lil bit of nasty)," he adds. It's unclear whether this is a backhanded critique of throwing hands on TV or spiritual life coaching.

April 6, 2022: Alsina can't keep Jada's name out of his mouth, either. He released a song on April 5 in the aftermath of Will Smith's slap at the Oscars, titled "Shake the World," which appeared to reference their "entanglement." The song seems to pull directly from Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé's "Feeling Myself," where Beyoncé addresses the elevator incident with Jay-Z and Solange. "I heard it's some shit that's bound to go down when you got a billion dollars on the elevator / Well of course some shit was bound to go down when you tangled up with the world's favorite."

April 7, 2022: Shortly after The Sun pens a story that Alsina is nearing a book deal about his time with Jada, August goes on Instagram to (ahem) slap that rumor down. Alsina posted a screenshot of a text he seems to have sent to someone in his phone named "Stupid People 🤢 Stupid Rumors 🤮."

"[T]hey've written several fantasies, hypotheticals & fictions based about me on wattapad [sic]," Alsina writes, implying that he's aware of rpf fit of him and Jada on Wattpad. What a time to be alive! "If you're looking for that kind of entertainment, go read those! Read the book called 'HOLY BIBLE' while you're at it too."

October 11, 2023: Jada confirms her separation from Will in a clip from her forthcoming NBC News prime-time special with Hoda Kotb promoting her memoir, Worthy. She and Will live "completely separate lives" and function as divorced people do. She adds that the marriage ruse persisted because they were "just not ready yet" and "still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership … In regards to how do we present that to people? We hadn't figured that out." Their breakup had many contributing factors, Jada says.

"Why it fractured … that's a lot of things. By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," she explains. "I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever. I just haven't been able to break that promise."

That same day, People publishes an exclusive interview with Jada, where she claims Chris Rock previously attempted to ask her out amid rumors that she and Will were calling it quits, without mentioning when exactly. "And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce," she says. "So he called me and basically he was like, 'I'd love to take you out.' And I was like, 'What do you mean?' He was like, 'Well, aren't you and Will getting a divorce?' I was like, 'No. Chris, those are just rumors.' He was appalled. And he profusely apologized, and that was that."

October 13, 2023: NBC milks the clips from Jada's upcoming prime-time interview with Hoda Kotb for all it's worth. In a new teaser, viewers are treated with new details regarding the Slap. Jada says she didn't initially realize that Smith actually made contact, assuming that Rock had ducked away. In the full interview that airs later that night, Jada also describes being shocked to hear Will's infamous call to "Keep my wife's name out your f—ing mouth!" After all, she and Will haven't "called each other husband and wife in a long time." Jada also recalls a conversation she had with Rock immediately following the incident at the 2022 Oscars. They spoke as the best documentary reels played. "Chris looks to me and he says, 'Jada, I meant no harm,'" she remembers. "I'm just out of it because I'm really worried about Will. And Will's still talking. Now he's mad because Chris is talking to me." She believes the Slap doesn't represent Will as a person: "It's not him whatsoever." She says she and Will have not spoken to Rock since.

The jaw-dropping event led some to believe that Jada was the "bad guy" in the aftermath. "My honest opinion about that is that narrative had more to do with the false narrative that I helped to create on the Red Table," she says. In her eyes, the public viewed her as "the adulterous wife" who "forced him to go to the table and sit there."

"And now look at what she's done," she continues. "She has the power with an eye roll to make him go up and slap somebody onstage."

Ultimately, Jada is asked why she and Will don't just get an amicable divorce. "We don't want to," she answers. "We love our family. And we love each other. It's more of a life partnership. Now, ten years from now, Hoda, who knows?" She adds that the pair are currently focused on "deep healing" because of "everything that's transpired." And as for the possibility of a full reconciliation in the future? "He's getting old!" Jada says with a laugh. "Who's going to be there for him, Hoda? It's going to be me."

October 14, 2023: Will Smith responds to the separation revelations in an email to the New York Times included in a profile about Jada's memoir. "When you've been with someone for more than half of your life," he writes, "a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties."

October 16: 2023: Jada takes herself to the Today show once again for a live, in-studio interview following her explosive prime-time NBC special with Hoda Kotb. This time, she says she is no longer divorced in theory … i.E., the couple in question is getting back together. "This whole journey, as difficult as it's been, has brought Will and I closer in such an authentic way," she tells the morning show. "Instead of trying to be a thing, it's tearing all of that down and finding what's true between us. It's been difficult but beautiful."

Kotb asks Jada to be "100 percent clear." Are she and Will really reconciling? "Yes, we are working very hard to bring our relationship back together … back to a life partnership," she explains, expressing frustration that this fact was glossed over in the original prime-time interview. "Here's the thing about husband-wife marriage for me, my healing process. I came into that with very specific ideas that blocks me from seeing Will as who he is. He can't be this perfect, idealized husband. I have to be able to accept him for the human that he is. He accepts me for the human that I am, and we want to love each other there." She suggests they might even "live in the same house" now.

Breakups and open-marriage rumors had plagued the couple for years, and it ramped up when Pinkett Smith told HuffPost Live: "I've always told Will, 'You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK."

"Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man," she continued. "I'm here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that's not for me to do for him. Or vice versa."

Days later, Pinkett Smith released a statement on Facebook, clarifying her interview comments.

"There are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether I have an open marriage or not," she said. "I am addressing this issue because a very important subject has been born from discussions about my statement that may be worthy of addressing."

"Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so," she said. "This does NOT mean we have an open relationship...This means we have a GROWN one."

November 7, 2013: Smith was accused of cheating on Pinkett Smith with costar Margot Robbie.

Black-and-white photos obtained and published by Star Magazine showed Smith and Robbie playfully posing together. According to the publication, the photo-booth images were taken in New Orleans when the actors had a break from filming the movie "Focus."

"Once they pulled the curtain back to take the pictures, they let their inhibitions run wild, laughing, hugging, and muzzling each other in the dark," an anonymous witness told Star.

To this day, Smith has never commented on the allegations, but according to E! News, Robbie responded at the time via Twitter (now known as X).

"Been working non-stop, just catching my breath," Robbie reportedly wrote on November 7 that year. "There's absolutely no truth to the ridiculous rumor in Star mag."

September 16, 2017: Actor Leah Remini accused Jada Pinkett Smith of being a Scientologist.

"I know Jada's in. I know Jada's in. She's been in Scientology a long time," Remini, a former Scientologist who's since been vocal about her experience, told The Daily Beast. "I never saw Will there, but I saw Jada at the Celebrity Centre."

In the same interview, Remini referred to the Smiths' since-closed school, New Village Leadership Academy, as a "Scientology school."

Pinkett Smith previously insisted that their institution wasn't affiliated with Scientology. She also responded to Remini's claims on X, saying that she's not a Scientologist.

"It is not a desire of ours to educate children with Scientology, that is not what Will and I want to do," she told NPR in 2009. "And our school is not, and I repeat, not a Scientology school."

Smith also told World Entertainment News Network that he had discussed Scientology with Tom Cruise, but he and Pinkett Smith "don't necessarily believe in organized religion."

During an appearance on "RTT" in October 2018, the Smiths again said that they've never been Scientologists.

Pinkett Smith also invited Remini to the show, and they sat down for a frank discussion about their feud. Pinkett Smith explained that she grew up learning about various religions and exploring them out of curiosity.

"I always took the position that I'm here at the Scientology Center to learn what I want to learn, and I have no interest in being a Scientologist," she said.

October 17, 2018: Pinkett Smith said that she and Smith preferred not to label their dynamic as a marriage because it's too confining.

"I needed a different form to dissolve all the expectations that I had of a marriage," she told People magazine. "I needed to do that to see Will outside of husband and see him as a human being."

"I started dissolving all the ideas and expectations and labels," she added.

October 22, 2018: Smith said that he cried "uncontrollably" in a restaurant bathroom when he realized he was in a relationship with the wrong person.

Smith and Pinkett Smith opened up about their relationship during a 2018 episode of "Red Table Talk."

Smith prefaced the interview by saying: "We have created a marital and family paradigm that has been speculated about for a lot of years so I'm excited to tell the truth."

During the conversation, the "Independence Day" star recalled being married to Zampino when he met Pinkett Smith in the '90s.

While having dinner with Zampino, Smith abruptly left the table because he had "a realization that I wasn't with the person I was supposed to be with."

"I was sitting in a stall in the restaurant and I was crying uncontrollably and then laughing like, 'What the heck is wrong with me?'" Smith said.

"I knew that was the woman I was supposed to be with, but I was never getting divorced," he said. "I don't get divorced."

Zampino, however, filed for divorce on Valentine's Day and Smith started dating Pinkett Smith shortly thereafter.

October 22, 2018: Pinkett Smith said that she cried on her wedding day to Smith because she "never wanted to be married."

On the same episode of "RTT" in which Smith recalled crying in a bathroom stall, Pinkett Smith spoke about being against the idea of marriage and a wedding ceremony – to the point that she was miserable on the day of their nuptials in 1997.

"I just never really agreed with the constructs," she said of her opposition to marriage. "I just don't agree with it. I never have. I still don't."

Pinkett Smith, who was three months pregnant at the time with their son Jaden, said that she was "so upset that I had to have a wedding."

"It was a horrible wedding," she said.

"I cried the whole way down the aisle," Pinkett Smith added.

October 29, 2018: Smith said that they broke up within their marriage and came back together.

In part two of their "RTT" conversation, Pinkett Smith said that the hardest part of their marriage was when she turned 40 in 2011, and she experienced a "midlife crisis."

"One day our marriage came crashing down," Pinkett Smith said. "We came to the realization that we had to redefine our relationship."

"Your 40th birthday was my low point," Smith said, adding that he "snapped" after Pinkett Smith called him out on her celebration being turned into a "ridiculous display" of his ego.

Pinkett Smith said that at the time, she wasn't living her life authentically. After that disastrous birthday, she confronted Smith about how his dream of a perfect family resulted in a "decline" in their marriage."

"We essentially had to destroy our marriage," Smith said, clarifying that divorce "wasn't a consideration" for either of them.

"I put in too much. Period," Pinkett Smith. "What is most important to me is my family. I was thinking about our family. Not even just our immediate nucleus, but we have such a huge extended family and I knew that divorce wasn't necessary. Why do that? Why create all that disruption?"

"I was devastated even worse than a divorce," Smith said. "We broke up within our marriage and got back together again and had to rebuild with new rules and something way, completely different."

After taking time apart, the stars came back together with a new perspective on their dynamic.

"It's a life partnership in the sense that we've created a foundation together that we know is for this lifetime," Pinkett Smith said.

"We have devoted ourselves to each other in a spiritual sense," Smith said. "Whatever she needs she can count on me for the rest of her life."

July 10, 2020: Pinkett Smith said that she had a relationship with the musician August Alsina during a breakup in her marriage to Smith.

Pinkett Smith shared her side of the story on an episode of "RTT" after Alsina publicly said that they had a relationship "for years." The "Gotham" star said that their "entanglement" began around 2016 when she and Smith were experiencing "a difficult time." She said that the Oscar-winning actor was "done" with her when she met Alsina.

"We decided that we were going to separate for a period of time and you go figure out how to make yourself happy and I'll figure out how to make myself happy," Smith said. "I really felt like we could be over."

"We were over," Pinkett Smith replied, adding that they were "separated amicably."

September 27, 2021: Smith revealed that he and Pinkett Smith aren't monogamous.

"Jada never believed in conventional marriage ... Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship," Smith said in an interview for the November cover of GQ. "So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up."

"There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple?" he continued. "And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection."

Smith said that he and Pinkett Smith "have given each other trust and freedom."

"And marriage for us can't be a prison," he added, saying that both he and Pinkett Smith engaged in "other sexual relationships."

However, Smith decided not to elaborate further because he didn't want "to deal with the backlash of that in the world."

March 27, 2022: Smith infamously rushed the stage at the Oscars and slapped host Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Pinkett Smith's bald head.

Before presenting the award for best documentary, Rock made a couple of jokes, including one in which he told Pinkett Smith: "Jada, I love ya. 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't wait to see it."

Pinkett Smith, who has experienced hair loss due to the autoimmune disease alopecia, cut her hair off because of her condition.

When Rock took a jab at her appearance, the star simply rolled her eyes.

Smith, however, got up from his chair and slapped Rock in the face. Rock played off the assault, saying: "Oh, wow! Wow. Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me."

But Smith wasn't done. After returning to his seat next to Pinkett Smith, he shouted: "Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth!"

In the aftermath, celebrities in attendance at the Oscars were seen comforting Smith. The actor later apologized for his behavior later in the evening, when he won an Oscar for his performance in "King Richard."

June 22, 2023: Jaden Smith said that Pinkett Smith introduced the family to psychedelics.

"I think it was my mom, actually, that was really the first one to make that step for the family," Smith said at the Psychedelic Science conference in Denver, Colorado, per USA Today. "It was just her for a really, really long time and then eventually it just trickled and evolved and everybody found it in their own ways."

Smith added that using psychedelics strengthened his bond with his sister Willow and his half-brother Trey.

Naturally, Pinkett Smith received criticism for introducing her children to hallucinogenic drugs.

On a previous episode of "RTT," she said that psychedelics improved her mental health.

"I struggled with depression for so long," she said. "And the thing about the plant medicine is it helps you feel better but also solves the problems of how you got there in the first place."

"You have to really wanna do it, this is not for play," she added. "You have to be willing to confront some hard stuff. It is very healing, and it has changed my life."

In an interview with People, published shortly after Smith's comments, Pinkett Smith played coy and instead told the publication that "it all gets answered" in her upcoming memoir "Worthy."

The Smiths have faced other backlash over the years for their laid-back approach to parenting.

When Willow Smith cut off her hair at 12 years old, people criticized her parents for allowing a child to make that decision. Pinkett Smith spoke out about the backlash on Facebook in 2020.

"Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair," she wrote, per People magazine.

"Even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother's deepest insecurities, hopes and desires," Pinkett Smith added.

In a later episode of "Red Table Talk," the star recalled facing "hardcore criticism" for giving her daughter that freedom.

The Smiths' parenting was again questioned when Jaden Smith began wearing skirts for Louis Vuitton's womenswear campaign in 2016 as well as red-carpet appearances. While many criticized the musician's gender-fluid style, Pinkett Smith supported it.

"I give Jaden props," she said on "RTT," applauding her son for his unconventional fashion choice as "a Black young man and the son of like an über masculine hip-hop star."

Smith also said that many people didn't appreciate the revelation that he and Pinkett Smith don't punish their children.

"The way that we deal with our kids is, they are responsible for their lives," Smith told Metro UK, per E! News. "Our concept is, as young as possible, give them as much control over their lives as possible and the concept of punishment, our experience has been — it has a little too much of a negative quality."

Pinkett Smith opens up about their relationship status in her upcoming memoir, "Worthy." She also discussed that bombshell from her book during an interview with "Today" show cohost Hoda Kotb, as part of a prime-time special airing on Friday at 8 p.M. ET on NBC.

In a preview clip released ahead of the TV special, Kotb mentioned being surprised by the revelation that Pinkett Smith and Smith chose to live "completely separate lives" in 2016.

Pinkett Smith confirmed that they didn't legally divorce, but separated.

This new information means that the actors have been keeping up appearances for the past seven years. Pinkett Smith and Smith weren't in a relationship during the many times they discussed their marriage on "RTT" or when the "King Richard" star defended his "wife" at the Oscars.

Pinkett Smith told Kotb she and Smith withheld this news for so long because they were "still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership" and how to "present that to people."

"By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying," she said of what led to their separation. "I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."

Pinkett Smith also said that they live separately, but refuse to get a divorce.

Fans of The Real Housewives of New Jersey followed Lauren Manzo's romance with now-estranged husband Vito Scalia for more than a decade.

The twosome started dating in 2009 after meeting through Lauren's older brother, Albie Manzo. Initially, Albie was concerned that his friendship with Scalia would suffer because of Scalia and Lauren's romantic connection, but the group eventually worked it out.

Lauren and Scalia got engaged in 2013 after four years together. Their July 2015 wedding was televised as part of the Manzo family's spinoff show, Manzo'd With Children, which ran for three seasons from 2014 to 2016.

"Last night was unreal and absolutely perfect," Lauren wrote via Instagram after the ceremony. "I had my fairytale wedding, fairytale dress but most importantly the best Prince Charming by my side to enjoy it with … I love you HUSBAND!!!"

Nothing but love. The Real Housewives of New Jersey alum Caroline Manzo has become the matriarch of one of Bravo's most memorable families. The reality star was born in August 1961 to parents Nettie and Joseph Laurita and is one of the couple's 11 children — the youngest of which is Caroline's former costar, Dina […]

In October 2023, however, Lauren confirmed that she and Scalia had called it quits after eight years of marriage. "This has been done for a very long time," she told her Instagram followers after Scalia's divorce filing made headlines. "We were on the same page. This is something that we did together."

Keep scrolling for a look back at Lauren and Scalia's complete relationship timeline:

Scalia popped the question after he and Lauren had dated for four years. "I'm so incredibly happy!" Lauren told Us Weekly at the time. "I'm in shock. I'm so excited to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. Well, he was my brother's best friend first, but I stole him!"

The twosome welcomed their first baby, daughter Marchesa Anna, who goes by Markie.

    January 2019

Scalia shut down rumors about his marital status after fans noticed that Lauren hadn't posted a photo of him on social media in more than one year. "We just don't put our relationship on social media and people can't seem to understand that," he wrote via Facebook. "We are perfect!!!!!!"

Lauren's mother, Caroline Manzo, also clapped back at rumors about her daughter's marriage. "Hey, spoiler, Lauren and Vito are still very much married," she said during an interview on Albie's "Dear Albie" podcast. "Everybody seems [to ask], '[Are] Lauren and Vito married?' They are very much married. Lauren just doesn't post a lot because she doesn't want to hear your bulls–t. Plain and simple. We deal with a lot of bulls–t; she doesn't want to hear it."

Caroline offered an additional update on Lauren's family, saying that everyone was "alive and well and happy" during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. "Lauren and Vito and, of course, Markie are doing well and great," Caroline continued. "Vito Scalia and his deli and his restaurant are still there. Lauren Manzo and her salons are still there."

    July 2023

Lauren chimed in after social media users questioned her relationship status when they noticed she wasn't wearing her wedding ring in a photo. "First of all, I truly give zero f–ks if you admire me or not," she wrote via Instagram. "Secondly, I haven't been on TV for 7 years. I am allowed to keep many aspects of my life private especially after having a child. If you don't like it then stay away from my page. Simple as that."

The reality TV curse spares no Real Housewives franchise. Several Real Housewives duos who have called it quits over the years renewed their vows on their respective franchise before they filed for divorce, contributing to a "reality TV curse." Dorit Kemsley, for her part, told Us Weekly in April 2021 that Kyle Richards warned her […]

Lauren revealed that her and Scalia's split had been coming for a while before his divorce petition made headlines. "I just want to let you guys know we're all good. This has been done for a very long time," she said in an Instagram video. "The last part of the process was filing. We were on the same page. This is something that we did together."

She went on to say that their privacy is "important" to them because of their daughter. "We haven't been on TV in seven years, which is why we did not feel the need for some dramatic announcement," she explained. "And we continue to move forward with love and respect for each other. And we will always be a family, and that's it. It's about our daughter and her privacy, because she didn't ask to be on TV — we did."
